what are cookies?

cookies are text strings that the websites visited by users (so-called publishers, or "first parties") or different sites or web servers (so-called "third parties") place and store on the user's terminal device, so that they can then be retransmitted to the same sites on the next visit. *

what are they used for?

cookies are used for different purposes: performing computer authentication, monitoring sessions, storing information on specific configurations concerning users who access the server, storing preferences, or facilitating the use of online content, such as keeping track of items in a shopping basket or information for filling in a computer form, etc.; but they can also be used to profile the user, i.e. to "observe" their behaviour, for example in order to send targeted advertising, measure the effectiveness of the advertising message and adopt consequent commercial strategies. in this case, we are talking about profiling cookies. *

technical cookies

these are generally necessary for the proper functioning of the website and to allow browsing; without them, you may not be able to view pages correctly or use certain services. for example, a technical cookie is essential to keep the user connected throughout their visit to a website, or to store language, display, and other settings. they are not used for other purposes and are normally installed directly by the website's owner or operator. the prior consent of users is not required for the installation of these cookies.

these cookies are divided into:

a. essential cookies, strictly necessary for the functioning of the website. without the use of these cookies, some parts of the website would not function. they include, for example, cookies that allow access to protected areas of the website. these cookies do not collect information for marketing purposes and cannot be disabled;

b. session cookies, which are deleted immediately when the browser is closed;

c. persistent cookies, which – unlike session cookies – remain within the browser for a certain period of time. they are used, for example, to recognise the device that connects to the site, facilitating authentication operations for the user;

d. analytical cookies, similar to technical cookies when used directly by the website operator to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the website;

e. functionality cookies, which allow the user to browse according to a series of selected criteria (for example, the language, the products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the user.

profiling cookies

these cookies are designed to profile the user and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user while browsing.

third-party cookies

these are generated and managed by parties other than the operator of the website the user is browsing (as a rule, by virtue of a contract between the website owner and the third party).

are analytical cookies technical cookies?

analytical cookies can be assimilated to technical cookies if used for the purpose of optimising the site directly by the owner of the site itself, who may collect statistical information in aggregate form on the number of users and how they visit the site.

if, on the other hand, the processing of such statistical analyses is entrusted to third parties, the user data must be minimised in advance and may not be combined with other processing or transmitted to other third parties. under these conditions, the same rules apply to analytics cookies as to technical cookies in terms of information and consent. *
